The Art of Quilting
October 2022 – November 2022
Marvol Gallery in association with the Good Hope Quilters Guild is pleased to present “The Art of Quilting”. An exhibition that showcases an exquisite and unique selection of quilts ranging from Eastern Europe, the Middle East, South Asia, and South Africa. It is believed that the history of quilting began as far back as 3400 BCE. The current oldest quilt that has been found intact was discovered in a Mongolian cave, dating between 100 to 200 BCE, and is currently kept in the Saint Petersburg department of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Archaeology Section.
For most of its history, quilting was primarily a technique that was used with the intent of providing warmth and protection. However, over time, the purpose has evolved to include other purposes, such as commemorating events, such as weddings, the birth of a new family member, political activism, decoration, and even fine art.
