What is the value of art? Is it solely by its monetary attributes as dictated by galleries, auctions, and the market – as the price you pay? Or does it carry an intrinsic value by its sheer existence and interaction in the world? What happens when it is not seen for that value to materialise? A vault is a structure for the safekeeping of valuables stored away and only seen by a few occasionally. The material value remains but what happens to the immaterial worth as artworks are hidden away?

Artworks tell stories, capture, reflect, and critique the Zeitgeist and carry that ethereal essence needing to be shared. The real hidden value is being hidden in the vault waiting to be let out. This small installation is a visual discovery of South African artists safeguarded by Stephan Welz &Co who re-emerged on the Marvol Gallery’s walls.
