Beyond the Canvas: Corporeality, Materiality, and Texture
10 December – Current
Art, more than a mere image, has a body of its own. Beyond the Canvas – Corporeality, Materiality, and Texture seeks to examine the transformative potential of materials in the hands of the artist.
Through the artist’s vision and creative manipulation, any material and its inherent physical attributes can become a powerful tool for expression, social commentary, environmental awareness, and cultural exploration. The boundaries of the traditional canvas have been transgressed. The true body of an artwork is in its physical substance, and the artist’s chosen materials are vital to the conceptual meaning of their work.
This exhibition looks at the importance of materiality as a versatile tool for the artist to bend, manipulate, and give identity to the mundane, physical world. Disregarded plastic bags receive a new life as floating ethereal clouds, rice paper serves as an alternative form for painting, and well-worn carpets are the integral backdrop of the imagery. By moving beyond the two-dimensional plane, artists can layer textiles, shapes, and forms, explore their intuition, and forge connections between materiality, narrative, and identity.
Content and context can only be fully understood if one engages with the narrative and history of the chosen objects and materials. Materiality is not an afterthought but part of the full story.
